Submissions on the Crown Minerals Act 1991 Programmes close soon

Publish date: 21 January 2025

This is a reminder that submissions on the Crown Minerals Act (CMA) Programmes update close at 5pm on Tuesday 11 February 2025.

Information on the proposed changes, and the submission form, can be found on our website.

Crown Minerals Act 1991 Programmes - New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals

The CMA is currently supported by two Programmes: The Minerals Programme for Petroleum 2013 and the Minerals Programme for Minerals (Excluding Petroleum) 2013, together referred to as “the Programmes”.

The Programmes were last updated in 2013. Since then, several changes have been made to the CMA via amendment acts passed by Parliament, and further changes are proposed to be made by the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill 2024 currently progressing through Parliament.

Updated Programmes have been drafted to reflect these past and proposed legislative changes.

Consultation opened in November 2024, and closes at 5pm 11 February 2025.

The Programmes set out how the Minister for Resources and delegated decision-makers will exercise their powers and interpret and apply specific provisions in the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA), and associated regulations. The Programmes also provide general operational guidance.

As the consultation timeframe is prescribed in the CMA, extension and late submissions cannot be considered.
