Petroleum statistics
Technical data and samples are managed by government and made publicly available.
Prospecting and exploration data
All prospecting and exploration data collected by petroleum permit holders must be shared with NZP&M – including physical core samples, all seismic and aerial survey data, and petroleum well data.
This technical data is made publicly available at the earliest of five years after it was acquired, or when a permit ends. It is available through the NZP&M’s Geodata Catalogue:
This data makes a significant contribution to the geological knowledge of New Zealand and is used by the broader science community, as well as petroleum explorers.
The National Core Store in Featherston, Wairarapa, houses the collected minerals and coal core, cuttings and samples, and is regularly used by researchers.
