The mineral potential of New Zealand report, 2024

GNS Science, commissioned by the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE), has undertaken a detailed stocktake of New Zealand’s known mineral potential, a key action of the draft Minerals Strategy for New Zealand to 2040.

This is a specialist geological report, bringing together extensive mineral deposit research, geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies and mapping, and GIS-based mineral prospectivity mapping, to summarise New Zealand’s onshore and offshore mineral endowment.

The report improves the baseline level of data about New Zealand’s mineral endowment and will be used to inform policy decisions and attract investment in mining opportunities to enable a strategic and considered approach to growing our resources sector.

The report highlights short, medium and long-term prospects for minerals development as well as opportunities for New Zealand to increase self-sufficiency in raw minerals that are valuable to the economy.

Note: At 4.30pm on 29 August 2024, we issued a revised version of the ‘The mineral potential of New Zealand – Part 1’ report. The revision corrects minor errors in data sections ‘Gold: Orogenic Gold Deposits – Mesozoic – Macraes underground and pits’ (Table 7.2) and ‘Project Area – Martha Underground and Martha and Gladstone pits’ (Table 7.2).
