Minerals permit processing performance

With a shift to the online management of permit applications, NZP&M has set standard target timelines for processing various types of mineral permit applications.

Each year we process around 400 to 500 minerals applications, and aim to have 80% of applications within the target timelines by 2017.

As part of our continuing efforts to make permit processing easier and more efficient, we aim to conduct the bulk of our permitting business online by July 2018.

To provide transparency we publish quarterly data on permit processing times.

Standard target timelines

We use timeline targets to monitor and report on our permitting approval performance. Target timelines are set for standard key NZP&M approval processes. More complex, or non-standard, applications generally require more time to assess. We routinely reviews target timelines, staff resourcing levels and approval systems to continually improve our permitting process.

Our approval performance measures exclude the time taken by processes outside NZP&M’s control. When an application process is outside NZP&M’s control (eg. we await more information from the applicant), the time taken during this process is not included when calculating NZP&M’s approval performance. In effect, the 'clock is stopped'. The clock is started again when we receive the requested information from the applicant. Stop the clock events and dates are recorded on NZP&M’s online lodgement and approval tracking system.
